Love on the Run

In the final film of ‘le cycle Doinel’, Truffaut follows the new and old loves of the now divorced Antoine.

He encounters Colette on a train, his first love from Antoine et Colett’, and they discuss the recently published autobiography detailing his past love life. Truffaut ably blurs once more the lines between life, love and cinema by reflecting upon the past experiences of his alter ego par excellence. The film is a collage, which incorporates footage from the previous Doinel films and La nuit américaine (Day for Night). In addition to Jean-Pierre Léaud and Claude Jade, Marie-France Pisier returns to the story. The transformation of their characters and performances is a treat to behold.
