In an attempt to spice up their dwindling relationship, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) finally gives into to her partner Ismaël's (Louis Garrel) desires by agreeing to invite his co-worker, Alice (Clotilde Hesme), into their bed. However, when tragedy suddenly strikes, they find themselves face to face with the fragility of life and love. One thing is certain for the trio: their lives will never be the same again.
Directed by one of the most exciting filmmakers of his generation, Christophe Honoré (Ma mère and Dans Paris) offers up yet another breathtakingly original film. Les chansons d'amour is an exuberant and tender, modern-day musical of love lost and found in the most romantic city on earth.
Divided into three chapters - Departure, Absence, and Return - Honoré evokes Jacques Demy's classic musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as he channels the spirit of the French New Wave. Lead actor and director's muse, Louis Garrel is in particular reminiscent of Truffaut's most memorable character Antoine Doinel, played by Garrel's own acting idol Jean-Pierre Léaud.
Honoré is, as ever, well-served by his exceptional cast of actors, including the captivating Chiara Mastroianni (Persopolis) and a particularly memorable turn from the superb Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool). The talented young Garrel is himself no stranger to the ménage-à-trois, following his role as Theo in Bernardo Bertolucci's infamous, The Dreamers.
Assisted by Alain Beaupain's marvellous score and stunning cinematography by Rémy Chevrin, Honoré has composed one of the most engaging and heartfelt romantic dramas of recent times.
