Jacques Demy followed on from his successful debut Lola (1961) with this dark love story between two gamblers. Young and prudent bank employer Jean Fournier (Claude Mann) is absorbed into the gambling world after a huge roulette win in Paris. The desire to test his luck further brings Jean into the casinos of the beautiful French Rivera and under the spell of Jackie (Jeanne Moreau) a beautiful compulsive gambler. Could the game that bought them together be the thing that drives them apart? Moreau is bewitching as the bottle blonde femme fatale who continues to abandon conventional ties and responsibilities to spin the roulette wheel. Tune in to watch this hidden gem of the New Wave with a beautiful soundtrack by Michel Legrand, who would go on to score the unforgettable songs of Demy’s subsequent musicals, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.
