Retiring from the police force, Charles (André Dussollier) fears his investigative days are over when he enters ‘The Residence’, a clinic designed to treat neuro-degenerative diseases, in an attempt to slow his Alzheimer’s and relieve his son of any guilt-inspired responsibility.

When Charles notices patients around him dying with little to no questions being asked, he begins to raise some of his own. Realising his concerns are falling on condescending deaf ears, he decides once more to don his investigative hat and undertake one final case: but with his dwindling mental capacity and no back-up, this will prove to be the hardest one yet.

Bringing to mind Hitchcock’s Rear Window, veteran actor and Resnais regular, André Dussollier provides a master class in vulnerability on screen. Nicolas Boukhrief directs with an energetic subversion to the current trend of beefed-up anti-heroes infecting the contemporary mystery movie. Think Philip Marlowe in his twilight years…
