Hailed as the French version of ‘Heat’, this complex, action-packed thriller pits two of France’s heavyweights, Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteil, against each other as senior officers vying for the coveted position of Chief of Police. It is a brutal portrayal of the Parisian criminal underworld as well as the lack of morality within the police headquarters itself. Once close friends, fate has turned Vrinks (Auteuil) and Klein (Depardieu) into bitter rivals. When the opportunity presents itself to catch a gang of armed robbers, who have hitherto proved impenetrable, the competition between them rises along with the stakes. Their respective ruthless techniques threaten to sabotage not only each other, but also the slim chance to bring the gang to justice, risking the lives of everyone involved. The story is partly based on real events which took place at 36, Quai des Orfèvres (the French equivalent of Scotland Yard) during the 1980s and is expertly directed by Olivier Marchal, who spent many years in the police force, resulting in the film’s striking sense of authenticity. Following its release in 2004, ’36’ garnered much success for its elaborate plot, Hollywood-style grandiosity and bold performances, and was duly nominated the following year for a commanding 8 César Awards. ‘36’ is a visually stunning film, which not only fulfils all the criteria for a fast-paced thriller packed full of twists, but also deals with ultimate acts of betrayal in a subtle and thought-provoking manner. The stylish direction and cinematography, as well as a veteran cast, combine to make this an intelligent, suspense-filled police drama with multi-dimensional characters, who never cease to captivate and intrigue.
