Consistently hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time; together with Les Diaboliques, this gripping thriller earned Henri-Georges Clouzot the reputation as a French Alfred Hitchcock. In a decrepit South American village, four men are hired by the Southern Oil Company for a dangerous long-distance drive. The wages of 2,000 dollars per man are, literally, to die for, as the truck drivers are obliged to transport highly volatile nitroglycerine shipments across some of the most treacherous terrain on earth. This perfect blend of suspense and social satire won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1953.
