Set in 1920s Spain and taken from Benito Pérez Galdós’s 1892 novel, the great surrealist provocateur, Luis Buñuel, presents the sensuous and spellbinding story of Tristana. Catherine Deneuve plays the hauntingly beautiful and virtuous orphaned teenager, who finds herself under the guardianship of the respectable yet old and impecunious aristocrat, Don Lope (Fernando Rey). Whilst publically making great virtue of his self-restraint, the old man secretly takes advantage of his ward and makes her his lover. Three years after Belle de jour, a standout film within the already illustrious careers of director and star, Buñuel and Deneuve reunite for another sizzling tale of passion, jealousy and lust, which brought home the Oscar for best foreign film.
