Serge (Serge Gainsbourg) is a successful publicist, who comes to Venice to pick up his award for best commercial film. There he meets Evelyne (Jane Birkin), an alluring young English woman, and a passionate romance soon ensues. Nothing would appear to be able to separate this doe-eyed couple, except for the fact that Serge is married and has recently become a father. How will the growingly possessive Evelyne react? A celebration of the kitsch, psychedelic, free-loving era, Pierre Grimblat’s film is a blast from the past. Straddling two decades, which have come to encapsulate the swinging and hippy societies, Slogan serves as a significant piece of memorabilia. The striking visuals bring the viewer to back to a historical moment, as does the leading couple, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. The film brought the iconic couple together, both personally and professionally. Shortly after the film they recorded the scandalous and renowned song, ‘Je t’aime, moi non plus’, and two years later their daughter, the now accomplished actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg was born. The chemistry is apparent between the two, who are surrounded by two other notable stars of French cinema: Jean-Pierre Marielle, whose long and illustrious career includes Clean Slate and Quelques jours avec moi, and the enigmatic Juliet Berto, a darling of the New Wave, with notable turns in Rivette’s Céline and Julie Go Boating and Godard’s La Chinoise. A legendary cast to befit a unique film. Cert: 15
