Cédric Klapisch directs this wonderfully warm tale set in Barcelona about the limbo of student life.
Recent university graduate Xavier (Romain Duris) attempts to stave off adult responsibility by signing up for an Erasmus programme in a vibrant new city, Barcelona, leaving his girlfriend (played by a wonderfully sullen Audrey Tautou) in Paris. Xavier finds himself in a small, chaotic apartment where, beyond the demands of his economic and Spanish studies, he acquires a new perspective on life. Xavier’s new roommates come from England, Italy, Spain, Germany, Denmark and Belgium and stereotypes are gently displayed and equally mocked.
Essentially this light and funny film is about friendship and those who watch this will probably want to join the gang. The film has gained a popular fan base with students across Europe and is great for a nostalgic look back at student life. Indeed, Klapisch himself draws from his own experiences as a graduate student in New York University. A runaway commercial success in France, Pot Luck was nominated for 5 Césars, including Best Film, and spawned the sequel Russian Dolls (also showing on Cinémoi).
