Philippe Lioret on Welcome

Following his award-winning drama, ‘T’en fais pas, je vais bien’, which launched the career of Mélanie Laurent (last seen in Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious’), Philippe Lioret arguably went one better with this touching and socially engaged tale about the complex plight of people suffering at the hands of political and personal dilemmas. A film that achieved the rare double of critical and commercial plaudits (more than one million tickets sold in France), ‘Welcome’ reminds us that an honest, well-told story with depth of characterisation remains the most solid formula for filmmaking beyond the progress of digital effects, stunts and shock tactics.
