When Pierre (Romain Duris), a dancer in his thirties, is diagnosed with a terminal heart disease requiring a transplant if he is to survive, his older sister Elise (played by Oscar winner Juliette Binoche) moves in as his carer. Pierre spends most of his days in confinement, gazing out from his Parisian balcony, as the lives of the city’s inhabitants interweave and unfold before his eyes.
Cédric Klapisch (Pot Luck, Russian Dolls) dazzles our screens through his kaleidoscopic view of the French capital, as the ‘incidental stories’ of a variety of intriguing individuals intersect the lives of the two siblings. Along the way, we meet the ageing history professor Roland (the ever-brilliant Fabrice Luchini - Molière, Max mon amour), who finds himself in an ill-fated affair with his attractive college student Laetitia (the ever-rising Mélanie Laurent - Inglorious Basterds, Le Concert). Another familiar face, François Cluzet (Tell No One, L’Enfer), plays the professor's brother, a well-meaning architect, whilst single mother Elise finds herself attracted to Jean (Albert Dupontel), a food market vendor.
In his sixth collaboration with Duris, writer-director Cédric Klapisch expertly captures the entire essence of a sumptuous city in his tragicomedy replete with the bittersweet moments of human contact. Enjoy an evening of Parisian intoxication and a stellar ensemble, boasting an irresistible cast of French cinema’s brightest talents.
