After Jacques Deray's iconic 'La Piscine' and before Charlotte Rampling's turn in Francois Ozon's homage 'Swimming Pool', these two superior directorial and acting talents collaborated on this classic French murder mystery.

Obsessive Police Inspector Staniland's (Michel Serrault) latest case is the death of a pianist. In no time at all his investigation sends him stumbling across the scintillating femme fatale, Barbara (Charlotte Rampling) who quickly reveals herself to be the mistress of the murdered pianist. After Barbara confesses to the murder a little too hastily for Staniland’s unwavering standards, he sets out determined to find the man she is covering for. Relying on his instincts and obsession alone, Staniland enters an under-world desperate to unearth the mystery, but at what price?

An intelligent, well-scripted, and slick noir-thriller from Jacques Deray, who effortlessly transfers the complex thematic and narrative strands from the source novel by British novelist, Robin Cook, onto the screen.
