Cinémoi spotlight: Biutiful

The acclaimed Mexican director of 21 Grams, Babel and Amores Perros talks to Cinémoi about his new award-winning drama, Biutiful, starring Cannes- and Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Vicky Christina Barcelona). The story is about a single father who attempts to escape from his entanglement in the crime underworld of Barcelona. On top of this, he has to deal with his reckless and unstable wife who poses a constant threat to the safety of his children. The film paints a realistic portrait of people’s lives in the margins of the city, and is a continuation of Inarritu’s interest in solemn and personal themes, while it can also be considered as a significant step away from his earlier preoccupations with eschewing conventional narrative structure.
