Cannes Festival
“The Festival is an apolitical no-man's-land, a microcosm of what the world would be like if people could contact each other directly and speak the same language.”
Jean Cocteau
The history of French cinema is inextricably linked to that of the most famous film festival in the world, known to one and all by the name of its host city: Cannes.
First held in 1946 at the Casino de Cannes, the festival was initially little more than a tourist event until 1959 when it developed into the industry event that we know today with the launch of the Film Market. In 1955 the first Palme d’Or was presented to Delbert Mann for his film, Marty. After a resumption of the Grand Prix as the top prize from 1964 to 1974, the Palme d’Or was reintroduced from 1975 to the present day and represents the highest accolade in the international film industry.
CINEMOI will celebrate the Cannes fortnight every year; its programming will reflect films that have found success there over the years and report on the machinations of the international film industry as it comes together in all its glamorous glory on the Croisette.
